I have no particular affection for the revered "Watchmen" comic the way a lot of other nerds do, so my distaste for this adaptation isn't personal. It just doesn't add up to nearly as much as it thinks it does.
Does Birds of Prey have a post-credits scene
This is the gold standard of Superman movies, and was the best superhero movie bar none for many, many years. John Williams' score soars, and so does the believable and compelling romance between Superman and Lois Lane. The film convincingly blended camp (in the form of Gene Hackman's wonderful Lex Luthor), an epic origin story that actually felt epic, and funny lines. The scene in which Supes and Lois fly together is one of the most beautiful metaphors for new love ever captured on film.
Some may find that disappointing, but keep in mind that post-credits scenes are rarely anything special. They're a nice little moment, to send you out the door, but they can also carry outsized importance. I've seen entire theaters groan after a movie they enjoyed lacked a post-credits scene. They just sat through two hours of a film they enjoyed, but because they didn't get a 30-second stinger, they were now disappointed. In the case of superhero movies, that's like asking why you didn't get extra dessert with your dessert.
Sure, it'd be nice if Birds of Prey ended with some famous actress being called "Barbara Gordon" or if the Bat-signal started shining in the night sky, but that's not how it rolled, and that's okay. Plenty of folks are liking Birds of Prey, and so they should revel in the movie they saw rather than be bitter at the lack of a little post-credits scene.
The first big superhero movie of 2020 is here. Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) from director Cathy Yan is a new chapter in the DC Extended Universe's ongoing story of Gotham City. So the question that follows all superhero movies is relevant here too: Does it have a post-credits scene?
Being a major superhero movie, of course you want to know if there's a post-credits scene. We won't spoil the specifics, but no, there isn't a post-credits scene. There is, however, a little something extra that does happen after the credits. But it's not a scene. It isn't one or more actors citing scripted lines performing direction. But it's something It's, like... okay, remember Halloween from 2018? It's like that.
Marvel may have popularized the closing credits scene trend over the past decade, but that hasn't stopped DC's movies from getting in on the action in recent years. While Suicide Squad, Justice League, Aquaman, and Shazam have all featured after-credits stingers, other DC movies like Wonder Woman and the standalone Joker did not. But what about Birds of Prey?
While Batman's absence is never explained in the movie (you'd think he'd take notice of Harley blowing up Ace Chemicals and Black Mask going on a murder spree around Gotham), Harley does namedrop him at one point before the post-credits scene: She tells Cassandra Cain that she named her pet hyena Bruce, "after that hunky Wayne guy." It's a fittingly tongue-in-cheek nod to the character without getting tangled up in the details.
Warner Bros' Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is the latest film in the DC Extended Universe, but does the Harley Quinn movie have a post-credits scene setting up a sequel or spinoff? Birds of Prey is itself a spinoff from Suicide Squad, the 2016 David Ayer-directed film in which Margot Robbie first played Harley Quinn. Though that film wasn't a critical success, Robbie's Cupid of Crime was well received by critics and casual audiences alike. Warner Bros. put multiple Harley Quinn movies into development, but Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey is the first to hit theaters.
Now that Birds of Prey is hitting theaters around the world, fans may be wondering if they need to stick around through the credits for the Harley Quinn movie. Birds of Prey DOES have a post-credits scene - sort of. It's not a scene so much as Harley Quinn's voiceover providing one final joke for fans. While the credits of a movie are always worth watching to get an idea of who helped make a movie, Birds of Prey fans will want to stick around for the last laugh.
We won't reveal what exactly the Birds of Prey end-credits tease is for fans who want to remain unspoiled for the movie, but we will note that it doesn't necessarily set up a future DCEU movie or Harley Quinn spinoff - at least, not explicitly. So anyone hoping for some DCEU world-building or a teaser for Birds of Prey 2 may want to skip this post-credits tease. But moviegoers that enjoyed Harley Quinn's sense of humor and character in Birds of Prey will no doubt enjoy her final joke in the film, so it's well worth sticking around for at the end.
Birds of Prey is definitely not quite your average superhero movie, so does it have an end-credits scene like most comic book movies do? As with most things about this movie, the answer isn't super straightforward. Technically, yes, there is a post-credits scene in Birds of Prey, but if you're expecting a traditional teaser for something else in the DCEU, you'll be surprised.
So, what was Harley going to tell us? We don't know, of course, and since it's just a throwaway gag and not a real teaser connected to the overarching DC universe, it really doesn't matter much. It might have been "Batman's real name is Bruce Wayne," since there's evidence in the movie that Harley knows perfectly well who Gotham's broodiest hero really is: namely, she names her hyena-dog "Bruce." Honestly, it's probably a lot more fun to imagine your own way for that sentence to end rather than have it actually finish on screen, and that's very on-brand for the movie's quippy, fourth-wall-breaking sense of humor. But since the stinger is just a joke, not something narratively important, if you need to leave before the credits are over, you can bail out early without having to worry about missing a secret trailer or a last-minute twist.
We all know that post-credits scenes are basically tradition for superheroes at this point. Sure, it may be because of the MCU's example, but the modern DCEU has reliably followed suit. Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Shazam all teased upcoming movies with their after-credits scenes, so it's only natural to assume that the newly titled Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey would include one as well. But, in typical Harley Quinn fashion, sometimes it's better to expect the unexpected. Let's take a look at the ending of Birds of Prey and break down exactly what happened after the credits finished rolling.
Birds of Prey, the second movie starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, comes at an interesting time for the DC Comics multiverse. The movie is the first since the DC television and movie universes were (briefly) united when Ezra Miller's Flash from the DCEU met Grant Gustin's Arrowverse Flash in Crisis on Infinite Earths. This may have been the source of the rumor, widely shared on social media, that Birds of Prey might have a post-credits scene featuring a new Green Arrow now that the Arrowverse will no longer feature Oliver Queen (played by Stephen Amell).
These rumors have proven to be false now that Birds of Prey is out in theaters and people have stayed waiting for the after-credits Green Arrow scene only to be disappointed. In fact, the Margot Robbie does not have a proper post-credits scene at all, but there is something at the end for which the most devoted DC fans may want to stay.
Despite most movie fans associating post-credits scenes with superhero films thanks to Marvel's regular use of them, DC movies actually have relatively few scenes that start once the credits roll. The only DCEU movies featuring scenes after their credits are Aquaman and Suicide Squad, which have one apiece, and Justice League and Shazam, which each have two.
Those these films have teased sequels in those scenes. Birds of Prey seemed to do that within the film narrative. At the end of the movie (mild spoilers) Harley and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) leave together, with many fans speculating that this means Cain will appear in The Suicide Squad as her eventual alter-ego, Batgirl, alongside Robbie's mallet-wielding maniac.
Birds of Prey (opens in new tab) takes flight this weekend, with Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn. The all-female superhero team-up should rule the box office this weekend but many fans are wondering if they should stick around for a Birds of Prey post-credits scene at the end of the movie.
No, Birds of Prey does not have a post-credits scene. However, something does happen after the end credits. It's not an actual scene, but fans may want to stick around to experience it.
The post-credits gag doesn't tease any future heroes and villains. There are not even any hints towards the future of the Birds of Prey (although the actual end of the film does a solid job of setting up all the main characters for future appearances in the DC Extended Universe).
It's kind of the perfect post-credits sequence for a film that centers on Harley Quinn, a character who is basically an agent of chaos unleashed onto the world. It makes perfect sense that she would choose to mess with the audience at least once in the film. However, her personal narration has been used consistently to clue the audience into her mental processes and thoughts throughout the film. There haven't been any of the kind of jokes that Deadpool would use, though. Saving it all for the final moments of the film gets a big laugh, and feels fitting not only for Harley Quinn but for the film as a whole.
These days, just about every franchise picture is virtually guaranteed to have a mid- or post-credits scene, and if we're talking about comic book films like Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), you can probably just go ahead and do away with the "virtually" part. Sure, such scenes are nothing new, and the superhero genre certainly didn't invent them; who can forget Ferris Bueller popping out in his bathrobe, admonishing us to go the hell home? For the current trend of post-credits madness, though, you can blame (or thank) Mighty Marvel, Nick Fury, and the Avenger Initiative; ever since the S.H.I.E.L.D. super-spy surprised Tony Stark (and the audience) at the end of Iron Man's credits, moviegoers have been trained to expect something a little extra after the credits roll. 2ff7e9595c
